NETI@home
This page describes the basic use of NETI@home.
Microsoft Windows:
- NETI@home Controls
- By right-clicking the NETI@home Controls (located in the Windows Tray), you can select properties.
- First, one can set their privacy setting.
- The maximum size for the netilog log file, geographical location, US Zip, email address, and interface can also be set from the properties menu.
- By right-clicking the NETI@home Controls and selecting "Stop NETI@home," you can stop NETI@home from monitoring your network connections.
- By right-clicking the NETI@home Controls and selecting "Hide NETI@home Controls," you can close the NETI@home Controls (this will not stop NETI@home from monitoring your network connections).
- By selecting Start->Programs->NETI@home->NETIMap, you can run the NETI@home NETIMap application, which only works while NETI@home is running.
- By selecting Start->Programs->NETI@home->NETI@home Logparse, you can run the NETI@home Logparse application, which will parse the netilog file and show its contents, which is equivalent to seeing what information is reported back to the NETI@home server at Georgia Tech.
- The file neti.conf contains the netilog maximum size, desired privacy setting, geographical location, US Zip, email address, and interface. While this is an acceptable way to change your setting, we recommend using the NETI@home Controls.
- The file netilog is a binary log file containing the exact information that is sent to the NETI@home server at Georgia Tech. To view the contents of this file, use the NETI@home Logparse application.
- Note for users of Windows NT/2000/XP: NETI@home runs as a service on these operating systems. As with other services, NETI@home can be controlled via "Services" in the Windows Control Panel. However, we recommend using the NETI@home Controls instead.
Others:
- neti - The file neti (usually located in /usr/sbin) is used to start NETI@home's monitoring of your network connections.
- neti.script - The file neti.script allows NETI@home to begin monitoring your network connections automatically at boot. This script is similar to other scripts typically located in /etc/init.d - We strongly encourage users to utilize this option to maximize the amount of information that NETI@home can collect.
- neti.conf - The file neti.conf (usually located in /etc) is used to specify the netilog maximum size, desired privacy setting, geographical location, US Zip, email address, and interface.
- NETILogParse - The file NETILogParse (usually located in /usr/sbin) is used to parse the netilog file (typically located in /var/log) and show its contents, which is equivalent to seeing what information is reported back to the NETI@home server at Georgia Tech.
- NETIMap - The NETIMap java program (usually located in /usr/bin/neti) is the NETI@home NETIMap application. This program should only be run while NETI@home is monitoring your network connections. To start the application execute the following command in the directory in which NETIMap.class is located:
java NETIMap
